One important thing that many customers fail to realize is that the cost for a delivery will often be higher than the cost of the food order. Simply put, a $5 Big Mac can not be delivered 5 miles for driver earnings of $3. NOT FAIR!
Most delivery drivers do not calculate what a fair and reasonable tip is by how large the order is unless it is a catering order or a large order that requires extra care. Tips are calculated by driving distance and the amount of time it takes to deliver the order. The snapshot below shows an order for $2.75 for 8.9 miles with no tip added prior to delivery. Only about 25% of customers will add a fair tip after the order is delivered leaving the bewildered driver with only $2.75 in his pocket to cover his vehicle costs, not to mention the time it takes for the trip. NOT REASONABLE! A fair and reasonable tip for a 9 mile delivery would be $7.00+ making the total amount earned by the driver, $9.75 (2.75+7.00) for his time and vehicle costs. Some trips can be made for the $5.00 mark, only if they are within one or two miles or if they are part of a combined trip of two orders.
